Forensic Services are specialised supports for people with intellectual, cognitive, or psychosocial disability whose lives have intersected with the justice system — or are at risk of doing so.
We work alongside participants, families, and services, bringing together disability, mental health, and justice expertise to reduce risk, build stability, and create real pathways back into community life.
We provide specialised supports for:
- People with intellectual, cognitive, or psychosocial disability engaged with the justice system.
- People wanting to change behaviour patterns that place them or others at risk.
- Families, carers, and services needing forensic-informed advice and practical strategies.

Understanding Forensic Disability
Forensic disability describes the overlap between disability and the justice system – it sits where disability, mental health, and justice systems overlap. When these systems aren’t connected, people can fall through the gaps — cycling between prison, hospital, and homelessness.
We work to change that pattern by creating integrated supports that build stability, safety, and community belonging. Inclusion, understanding, and effective support make communities safer for everyone.
People living with disability sometimes face unique challenges when their behaviours bring them into contact with that system — often when everyday difficulties with communication, decision-making, or emotional regulation lead to risk or conflict.
At Step As One, we see forensic disability not as a label, but as a call to understand the person behind the behaviour — and to give them the right support at the right time to help reduce risk of reoffending.
Pathways of Support
Our services often begin at a turning point — when someone is at risk of offending, or ready to transition out of a custodial or health care setting. Early, coordinated involvement helps reduce risk and improve long‑term outcomes.
Rehabilitation and Reintegration
Transitioning from a secure hospital or custodial environment can be one of the most vulnerable times in a person’s life. Our forensic services focus on the rehabilitation and support needs and provide structure and continuity during this process.
Supporting Community Reintegration
We coordinate with justice, mental health, housing, child protection and disability sectors to ensure every step of community reentry is supported. Key elements include:
- Pre‑release planning and stakeholder meetings.
- Stable housing and routine development.
- Therapeutic and behavioural continuity post‑release.
- Pro-social community based support and skill acquisition.
Reducing Re-offending Through Stability
Rehabilitation is about learning safer ways to live. Our support focus on building the participants capacity in their independence, accountability, and pro-social connection, which are proven protective factors against re‑offending.
Government and Sector Collaboration
Strong forensic disability outcomes rely on well‑connected systems. We work alongside government agencies, justice partners, and NDIS authorities to enhance service integration and policy development.
We partner with correctional services, hospital networks, and disability agencies to design practical solutions that bridge service gaps and improve accountability across systems.
System Consultation and Training
Our clinicians provide consultation and education to improve confidence in supporting complex clients. This includes:
- Workforce training in forensic and trauma-informed practice
- Risk assessment and management planning
- Guidance for restrictive practice reporting and compliance
- Debriefing and supervision for frontline staff
